Theyyam Festival in Kerala

Theyyam or the ‘Dance of Gods’ is one of the most mythical and mythological festivals in Kerala. Dedicated to Goddess Kali, it is celebrated wholeheartedly for three days across the North Malabar region of God’s Own Country; it is also celebrated across Kodagu and Tulu Nadu regions of Karnataka.

Theyyam is believed to be an 800-years old festival and is celebrated by people from various backgrounds; mostly tribal. Mainly celebrated to commemorate the heroic tales and tribal spirits of Kerala, festivity during this colourful festival begins with folk music, traditional rituals, dance performances, and a display of deep devotion.

During the festival, locals in Kasargod, Kannur, and other regions gather together to worship the Goddess to participate in the rituals. Local artists from across Kerala adorn themselves with colourful costumes, and perform their traditional dance along the tunes of their ritual songs. Festivity continues for three consecutive days, and takes the spirit of celebration to a whole new level among the locals.
